The Faculty of Computer and Information Technology Teacher Training is headed by Mr. Frezewd Lemma who is working with 27 staff members and 5 new staff members. It houses the departments of Geo Informatics, Management Informational Systems, and Computer Science, both in the Teaching and Applied streams, which is a new addition this year. There are 200 existing students enrolled under this faculty with approximately 30% female enrollment. In addition, they are expecting 300 freshman students for this academic year.
Many plans have been outlined for the year, such as establishing E- Resource and publishing a faculty newsletter called The CSITF Herald, which will serve to inform the University community, as well as their Industrial link partners on their current state and progress. Also, plans to create links with foreign Universities have begun. .
Future ambitions entail designing a 1-2 years Post Graduate Diploma Program in Computer Science/Software Engineering, Computer Networking/Administration Databases, and Management Systems/Management Informational Systems, which will provide a good opportunity for training those who already have their first degree. The faculty also has plans to develop short term training in the areas of Web Page, PC Maintenance, Basic Programming, and Basic Computer Skills, depending on the needs identified. In addition, they plan to train the University Staff in basic computer and programming skills. .
This year, they plan to begin a summer in-service program for Computer Science and Management Informational Systems, which is new for this faculty. .
This is a progressive faculty working towards development, especially now when “the computer is becoming another language.” .
Their motto is, “Positive change is possible, but we need to work together. Our goal is to change ourselves into a practical faculty. One way of achieving this is to develop a curriculum that is community-oriented. In other words, we want to teach in a way that’s relevant to our own society, so that our students will become reliable in the market. We want to make a curriculum that can work and change our society.” With progressive plans for this academic year, this faculty is well on its way towards new endeavors.
